Rodgers coy on Congerton

OPINION

It was, without exaggeration, a crushing blow when Brendan Rodgers left Celtic to join Leicester City earlier this season.

Many fans were left devastated, and the club, despite trudging on towards an eighth consecutive title, has looked a little rudderless at times under Neil Lennon.

Two 0-0 draws in succession in the league have made it very clear that there is still room for improvement at Parkhead, and there could certainly be a big summer ahead of the Hoops, regardless of who is at the helm.

With Rangers starting to look like a proper outfit again, albeit in fits and starts, recruitment will be more important than ever, and so supporters will be less than encouraged by Brendan Rodgers’ latest coy comments on the possibility of stealing Lee Congerton away from the club to link up with him at Leicester.

When asked about reuniting with Congestion, as quoted in the Daily Record, he said: “There is still work going on behind the scenes and we have a number of recruitment staff still here compiling the list for the types of players, and then the club will hopefully soon appoint someone.

“The club is working very hard behind the scenes identifying the types of players we can bring in, but that is ongoing.

“The club will ask my opinion on it. I will always work with the club on identifying the talent and people coming in hopefully can bring the talent in, but ultimately it will be the decision of the club. But I am happy with that.”

You would assume that Congerton would be Leicester’s first choice for the job, and the fact that Rodgers is happy with how things are progressing on that front could mean that he is on the cusp of landing his man.

Things haven’t always been perfect with Congerton at Celtic, but for a side on the brink of a transitional period, more upheaval is probably the last thing they need right now.

There will be a lot of sleepless nights over this one, and until it is resolved for better or worse, Parkhead will be nervy.
