Aston Villa are in the hunt to sign Everton defender Ashley Williams, according to The Sun.

The national newspaper claim that the centre-back’s £70,000-a-week contract (Source: Spotrac) is set to expire in the summer and he will leave Goodison Park once it does.

The Sun report that the Villans are not the only team keen on Williams’ services as Huddersfield Town, DC United and New York City are all also in the race to get his signature.

Good move for Villa?

No.

Williams’ experience and leadership qualities make him an appealing prospect, but it does seem like his best days are behind him.

The 34-year-old looked to be on his last legs at Everton, as his lack of pace was constantly exposed, and while he has done okay on loan at Stoke City this season, he is still not an inspiring signing to make.

This is especially the case when you consider that the Villans could be playing Premier League football next season if they win the play-offs; as Williams would be out of his depth in England’s top-flight at this stage of his career.

Likely to happen?

If the Villans win promotion then surely they will move to sign better centre-backs then Williams? However if they do stay in the Championship, then perhaps a move for the experienced defender makes sense if his wage demands aren’t too high; especially with him set to be a free agent.

Yet with several other teams in the race for the Toffees centre-back, it’s hard to imagine the Villans going all out to lure him to Villa Park, which means he’ll likely end up elsewhere.
