Jan Vertonghen has been dropped from the Tottenham side today because of a “touch of fatigue” according to Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold.

He added that manager Mauricio Pochettino does not want to risk him ahead of the first leg of the Champions League semi-final next week.

Pochettino has lined up with a back five for the lunchtime game, with Davinson Sanchez, Toby Alderweireld and Ben Davies in the middle, and Juan Foyth and Danny Rose on the flanks.

Gold made the claim on his personal Twitter page ahead of the 12.30pm kick-off.

OPINION

It’s not a massive surprise to see Vertonghen rested ahead of the game against Ajax on Tuesday. What’s perhaps more surprising is to see Ben Davies line up in the centre and Juan Foyth to reprise his right-back role that he impressed in against Man City. Foyth was brought in as a centre-back and that’s where he’s played the majority of his 22 games for Tottenham, but Pochettino commented yesterday that he’d been impressed with him on the right – both against Man City and in training. This could signify a position switch for the talented youngster as he bids to break into the first-team on a regular basis next season. Pochettino needs a new right-back with Kieran Trippier having a poor season and Serge Aurier not good enough for the role. We wouldn’t be surprised to see him moved on in the summer and Foyth could be the future for Spurs. He’ll be looking to impress again today at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
