Sky Sports pundits Ray Parlour and Steve Sidwell have been left raving over the performances of Tottenham’s Heung-min Son in Harry Kane’s absence this season.

The South Korean international has stepped up to the plate in the absence of the English hitman, who has been ruled out through injury, and he fired home two goals in the space of three minutes on Wednesday night against Manchester City to help Spurs through to the semi finals of the Champions League.

Having also scored in the first leg, Sidwell and Parlour were blown away by the sort of impact he has had, with the latter suggesting he enjoys it when Kane is missing from the side.

Sidwell started the rave review on Sky Sports’ The Debate (18/04, 22:00) by saying: “It’s about the other players that have stepped in. You look at Son, how he’s performed, it’s just phenomenal.”

Parlour echoed his fellow pundit’s verdict by saying: “He seems to up his game though. He seems to enjoy it when Harry Kane’s not playing because he’s the main man. The goals he took, especially the second goal was a fantastic one, and his running ability, the way he runs at players and goes past players, he’s been a revelation, near enough player of the season from Spurs’ point of view.”

Opinion

Son for player of the season? You would not bet against it, put it that way. The South Korean star really has gone from strength to strength and it is easy to forget that he has also been away not once but twice for his country on international duty. His stamina is incredible and you feel as though he could run and run for hours. He matches his physical capabilities with great technical skill and as proven on Wednesday night he knows exactly where the back of the goal is. Such confident performances mean that Spurs really do not have to worry too much about Kane being out. Yes, the club would rather him out on the pitch than sitting on the sidelines but when you have Son in this kind of form it softens the blow quite significantly. He seems like someone who thrives from being in the spotlight, which is funny considering he seems to be one of the most selfless players in the Premier League.
