Dean Saunders has named six Tottenham players in his alternative Premier League team of the year.

Following the announcement of the PFA team of the season yesterday – a side boasting six Manchester City players, four Liverpool stars, and Paul Pogba – the talkSPORT pundit was asked to name his XI without players from the top two.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Breakfast Show, Saunders named Danny Rose, Jan Verthongen, Toby Alderweireld, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min, and Harry Kane in his team of the campaign.

OPINION

This tells you an awful lot about Tottenham’s season. Aside from the top two, they have been the standout side with some top quality performances from a host of players throughout the side, but they have barely made an impact on the title race because of the dominance of Liverpool and City. That shouldn’t mean that this season is seen as a bust though. Obviously, they still have the Champions League to contend for, but even if they fail to win that, the fact that Mauricio Pochettino is able to get his side performing at the level that they do consistently, given the lack of resources available to the Argentine year after year. Hopefully, with a new stadium and an unexpected European run this season, this could come to be seen as the turning point in Spurs’ fortunes as they continue to pursue that elite club status they have craved for so long.
