Paul Robinson has urged Christian Eriksen to join Real Madrid if the Spanish giants “come knocking” this summer.

The Dane has yet to agree to an extension on his current deal in north London, and could leave at the end of the season instead of departing on a free when it expires next year.

This has drawn attention from the European champions, as reported by the Daily Mail.

And former Spurs goalkeeper Robinson has made it clear as to what he thinks the 87-cap international should do.

Speaking to beIN Sports, as quoted in the Mirror (5.26am), he said: “When Real Madrid come knocking, they don’t come knocking twice.

“It’s a one-off chance for him to go.”

OPINION

This is hardly the kind of advice Tottenham fans will want their ex-players dishing out to their current stars, but you can understand Robinson’s thinking on this one. Spurs are closer than ever to lifting silverware, but as of yet, they still haven’t. Even if they do win a Champions League this season, are they going to retain it next year? No chance. And it’s increasingly hard to see anybody breaking the Liverpool/Manchester City Premier League duopoly any time soon either. Going to Real, even a Real suffering a painfully average season, is a surefire way to ensure you have success in your career. Eriksen is 27 now, and while he could still have the best part of a decade at the very top level, he will know that he isn’t getting any younger. It would be hard for any player to turn their nose up at Real Madrid, but a talent like Eriksen, coming to the end of his deal and restricted by Spurs’ stringent wage caps, is surely going to be more tempted than most.
