Mauricio Pochettino has said that he has been impressed with Juan Foyth in training and said that he could play the youngster more on the right side of defence in the future.

The 21-year-old centre-back was played at right-back in the 1-0 defeat to Man City and caught the eye of Pochettino, who brought the youngster to north London in a £12million deal in 2017.

Talking  in the pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s game against West Ham, Pochettino was asked whether Foyth could play more on the right side.

“Yes. I think yes. I think he was very good,” Pochettino said, as quoted by Football.London.

“He played so well. The signal that he’s giving us in the training sessions, you can see and you can feel and you can trust him in that position.”

OPINION

This would be an interesting move. Foyth was bought as a centre-back and has played pretty much all of his games there for Tottenham. He’s only made 22 appearances in total since arriving from Estudiantes in the summer of 2017 and we were expecting to have seen more of him this season. However, Pochettino is hinting that his time could be coming and that there could be a position-switch in line for the youngster. It will be interesting to see if he plays today against West Ham. Serge Aurier is still out and Kieran Trippier could be rested for the huge Champions League semi-final against Ajax. That means Kyle Walker-Peters could get the nod but Foyth might think he’s got a good chance of playing after Poch’s comments. If Foyth does get the nod it could spell the end for Walker-Peters going forward. He doesn’t seem to have Pochettino’s trust and is only used sparingly when absolutely necessary.
