When your luck’s out, it’s out.

Vincent Janssen’s career at Tottenham has been a disaster. The 24-year-old striker arrived from AZ Alkmaar for close to £20million in the summer of 2016 but the former Netherlands international has only managed six goals in 39 games since then.

Left out of the squad entirely at the start of the season, he was thrown a lifeline in January by Mauricio Pochettino, who re-instated him in the squad after the winter window shut.

The ankle injury to Harry Kane was another glimmer of light for Janssen, and despite being behind Fernando Llorente in the pecking order, he might have hoped he could make the bench for the Premier League game against Huddersfield.

That’s been snuffed out after it was revealed that Janssen has also injured his ankle and is expected to resume training next week.

Tottenham’s injuries are mounting up again, with Serge Aurier, Eric Dier, Erik Lamela, Kane and Janssen all out, with Dele Alli set for a late fitness test on a fractured hand.

As for Janssen, it does seem like he’s never going to play for Spurs again and if they want to recoup any money for him, they’ll need to find a buyer for him in the summer, with his contract set to expire in 2020.

That would leave him able to talk to foreign clubs in January over a free transfer the following summer, but we think Spurs will cut their losses and move him on for a nominal fee.

If Janssen can find the form that persuaded Tottenham to buy him, he could turn out to be a real bargain.
