Former Tottenham enforcer Gary Stevens has sent a congratulatory tweet to promising centre-back Maxwell Statham, who has just signed his first professional contract with Tottenham.

His dan, Brian Statham, also a former Spurs player, posted a picture of his son signing his contract and said, “1st professional contract at one of the biggest and best clubs in Europe @SpursOfficial, hard work, dedication and sacrifice!”

Statham has made 13 appearances this season for Tottenham, including one outing with the Under-23s.

OPINION

Maxwell Statham has got a good pedigree and is following in the footsteps of his father. Brian Statham made two appearances for Tottenham in the late 80s before being sold to Brentford in 1992. Maxwell has already stepped up to the Under-23s, although the 4-0 defeat against Wolves wasn’t the best introduction. It’s the 18-year-old’s first professional contract and what a time to sign for Spurs. With the new stadium and Mauricio Pochettino in charge, there’s probably never been a better time to be a young Spurs player and more dedication and hard work could see Statham make the next step up. Pochettino has shown that he’s happy to consider young players, with centre-back Juan Foyth signing for Tottenham at the age of 19 and just starting to break through into the first-team. Statham now needs to push on and start performing consistently for the Under-23s next season.
