Daniel Levy has said that he wants Tottenham’s new stadium to host a Champions League final in the future.

The Spurs chairman has expressed his pride at the club’s new home, and believes that it is more than capable of hosting European football’s showpiece match and other huge sporting events.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, he said: “We have been delighted with the reaction from our fans and all visitors since we officially opened our new home two weeks ago.

“Our aim was always to create an iconic multi-use venue capable of hosting world-class events.

“We have the top UEFA stadium status, which means the venue is fit to stage any European football event, and we believe the stadium’s extensive capabilities, particularly the flexibility of having two surfaces, mean we can host a vast range of world-class sporting and entertainment events.”

OPINION

This is a huge statement of intent from Levy, but realistically, why not? There is a strong argument that the new stadium is already one of, if not the, best sporting venue in the world, and it only makes sense that it should be looking to secure the top events the sporting world has to offer. A Champions League final would surely be the pinnacle of that, the cherry on top of a very, very fine cake. It wouldn’t be able to happen until at least 2024, given that the deadline for submission for the 2021-2023 finals was the back end of March, but that shouldn’t put anybody off. This is going to be one of the best stadiums in the world for a long, long time to come. The hope will be that Spurs can live up to its billing, of course, and a first Champions League semi-final would be a nice step in the right direction. Whether they can see out their tie against Manchester City remains to be seen, but it’s bound to an interesting one, regardless of result.
