Glenn Hoddle has suggested that Tottenham’s hopes of progressing through to the Champions League semi-finals could rest on the shoulders of Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura.

Spurs take a 1-0 goal advantage with them to the Etihad on Wednesday night, but will be without star man Harry Kane, and Hoddle is of the impression that any chance they have could come on the counterattack.

Speaking to BT Sport about the first leg, he said: “It was a great result and I thought they deserved it in the end.

“City weren’t at their best but Spurs defended well against them. Could have done with a second one but that would have been perfect.

“If Spurs are going to get something up there in the second leg, it’s going to be on the break, and I think with Moura and Son, they’ve got a little bit of extra pace, so it might work out for them to counter against City.”

OPINION

Hoddle knows a thing or two about attacking football, and he’s probably right with his assessment here. Spurs are going to struggle to go toe-to-toe with City you would imagine, as most teams would, but if they can frustrate them and wear them down, then Pep Guardiola’s men could definitely be susceptible to the counter. Son is always lethal, but it will be the brilliant display put in by Lucas on Saturday that really gives fans hope. The Brazilian hit a fine hat trick against Huddersfield Town, and fingers will be crossed that he can take that form forward into Wednesday’s match. If he does, this could go down as one of the most famous nights in Spurs illustrious history. A lot will depend on who can get the first goal you feel. If City bag it could be like the Alamo for Spurs, and extra time will beckon, but if the visitors can sneak one in early, City will need three, and then things will get very interesting.
