Darren Gough sarcastically raved about Tottenham attacker Vincent Janssen’s display in the 1-0 win against Brighton.

The retired cricketer issued a three-word verdict on the 24-year-old’s brief appearance against the Seagulls after Adrian Durham mocked Eric Dier looking excited about the player being brought on.

“What a comeback,” said Gough while notably chuckling (talkSPORT, 16:35, April Wednesday 24th).

Mauricio Pochettino brought Janssen on in the 80th minute of Spurs’ clash with Brighton on Tuesday in order to make his first appearance for the team since August 2017.

OPINION

Gough’s sarcastic verdict on Janssen is rather telling about how much impact the attacker was able to make in the game. The forward was handed ten minutes to impress, and it’s hard to recall him doing anything of note. While the forward’s future at Spurs has looked bleak for a while, his failure to do anything in his cameo appearance was surely the final nail in the coffin. If Pochettino had more depth regarding his forward options, you feel Janssen wouldn’t have got a look-in on Tuesday. The only way the forward will make any more appearances this season is if the Spurs manager cannot find anyone else to call upon. While the 24-year-old clearly works hard and has the passion to turn his career around at Spurs, you just feel he doesn’t have the quality to do so. This may be harsh but if Spurs want to be a team winning trophies then Pochettino has to be ruthless when it comes to players not being up to the standard.
