OPINION

Kevin De Bruyne might be regretting what he said about Tottenham’s new stadium ahead of the Champions League quarter-final in London on Tuesday night.

With Tottenham in their new home, and with a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace from their first game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the bag, De Bruyne downplayed the impact it would have on the match.

He was quoted in the Independent as saying, “I don’t think there will be any difference. I don’t care about the stadium. I care about the team we play. Everybody talks about the stadium like it’s something special. Everybody has a stadium. Everybody has supporters.”

Heung-min Son took umbrage at this and said that other teams might understand if they’d been homeless for two years.

And anyone who watched the game last night would have seen the dynamics of the new stadium at play. The atmosphere was brilliant. Tottenham looked confident. Man City looked really nervous and that was a big surprise from a side with so much experience.

Aguero missed an early penalty and looked completely off the pace all game. Harry Winks managed to nullify the threat of David Silva and Fernandinho didn’t have the influence he normally does on big games.

You can’t put it all down to the new stadium, but we think KDB will know he got it all wrong after watching the first 89 minutes of the game from the bench. The stadium played a big part on Wednesday night.

Tottenham look at home already and they couldn’t have asked for a better start – two games, three goals and not one conceded. It might be too early to call it a fortress but keeping Man City out is a major brag.

We think the game would have played out very differently at Wembley.
