Southampton do not hold any interest in signing Rangers’ Scott Arfield despite reports linking the Premier League outfit with the Canadian international, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper state on their website that claims from the Daily Mail, who said the south coast club had concrete interest in snapping up the former Burnley man, were untrue and that he looks set to remain at Ibrox past the summer, with a contract in Glasgow until 2022.

Arfield has been crucial for Steven Gerrard’s men this season, scoring 11 goals and chipping in with seven assists in his 42 appearances across all competitions.

Opinion

This can only be good news for Rangers, who would have no doubt been fearing the worst when the speculation of a move back to England’s top flight emerged. Arfield has been massive for the club this season and he is going to play a huge role in whatever success the Gers can seal during his time at Ibrox, but heading back down south of the border to play among the world’s best players is always going to be tempting. Southampton might not be interested but he continues to impress the way he has done in recent weeks then there could well be other sides sniffing about, looking for a creative but industrious midfielder who has an eye for goal. They are a rare breed and Arfield is perhaps one of the leading lights among that particular skill set, so do not be surprised if more and more clubs start being linked with a raid at Ibrox. For now, he seems happy playing for Rangers and is no doubt wanting to bring them glory in Scotland.
