Alan Shearer heaped praise on Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne for his performance in the 4-3 win over Tottenham on Wednesday.

The Premier League icon was on commentary during Man City’s clash with Spurs and revealed that he thought the 27-year-old had been superb for his side as he had constantly whipped in balls for Sergio Aguero to attempt to fire home.

Shearer also added that De Bruyne had been absolutely magnificent in his opinion as he had been able to find little pockets of space to work in.

“De Bruyne has been absolutely magnificent tonight, the way he is finding those little pockets of space out on that right-hand side,” said Shearer while on commentary for Man City’s clash with Spurs (21:26, Tuesday April 17th, BBC Radio 5 Live).

“And whipping those balls in, whether it’s a cross or a pass to Aguero, see Aguero’s goal, he has been superb in doing that.”

OPINION

Man City may have beaten Spurs on the night, but they ended up crashing out of the Champions League on aggregate. Yet while the outcome probably has sadden Man City players and their fanbase alike, it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t see the positives in their side’s latest display. One of the positives was clearly De Bruyne’s performance, as he looked back to his best against Spurs. The attacking midfielder effectively ran the show for Pep Guardiola’s team and carved out chance after chance in order to keep the pressure on Tottenham. While De Bruyne’s performance will likely be overshadowed by the fact Man City exited the Champions League at the quarter-finals stage once again, his display shouldn’t be easily forgotten. Hopefully the midfielder is able to replicate his display on Saturday as Man City are once again set to face Spurs. However this time the London club will be trying to dent Man City’s hopes of lifting the Premier League trophy.
