Newcastle United will consider handing Rafa Benitez a one-year deal in order to achieve a quick fix to their current contract stand-off, according to the People.

The national newspaper’s print edition (Sunday April 21st, page 54) claims that the Magpies could change tact in their current contract talks with Benitez even though they’d rather he committed himself to the club for a longer period.

The People report that Benitez could be tempted by a one-year extension as he could test whether the Magpies would live up to their promise to spend £100million across the next two seasons.

OPINION

If a one-year deal gets Benitez to sign on the dotted line then what is Mike Ashley waiting for? With the Magpies manager’s current deal set to expire at the end of the season, everything must be done to ensure he doesn’t exit the club. Benitez has worked wonders at St James Park and has done an amazing job to keep his side comfortably in the Premier League. While it’s understandable that Newcastle would want Benitez to commit himself to the club for the long-term, especially if they’re going to splash the cash on new players, a quick fix is better than him packing his bags. If Benitez leaves St James Park at the end of the season, then it wouldn’t take long before another club acquires his services. The only issue about Benitez signing a one-year deal as far as Magpies fans are concerned, is that it would likely mean they’d be worried about the manager’s future for a whole another season.
