Newcastle United Midfielder Sean Longstaff has confirmed that he will return from injury in time for their pre-season tour.

Longstaff suffered knee ligament damage in his sides clash with West Ham in March and was ruled out for the season after assessment by the medical staff.

The starlet confirmed the good news when speaking to the Chronicle: “It’s going to be a tough summer – I’ll probably be in most of the summer – but I’m looking forward to it.”

“It’ll give me a chance to get back in pre-season and hopefully try and work as hard as I can to be around the team again and see if I can get back playing some games.”

Newcastle United revealed last month they will be travelling to China on a pre-season tour as part of the Premier League Asia Trophy competition.

OPINION

This is great news for all involved at Newcastle. Many feared the worst when Sean Longstaff went off injured against West Ham after he made such a positive start to his career in the North. With a full pre-season to get over his injury and back to full fitness, Longstaff will have every opportunity to force his way back into a starting position and earn Rafael Benitez’s trust once again after such a long term setback. With the uncertainty surrounding many futures at the club, the summer will be a massive time at the club, whether that be keeping monumental figures or clearing out the fringe players and figures that still haunt the club. This is a perfect opportunity for Longstaff, who has already shown this season how much of an asset he can be to the Magpies and their future plans. If the injury was worse than this then the young midfielder would have struggled to get back into the fold next season but with a full pre-season behind him, Longstaff will certainly be in the plans for who ever will be in charge of Newcastle come the start of the Premier League.
