Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle is wanted once again by Premier League rivals Fulham after his fine form on loan at West Brom in the Championship, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim on their website that the forward, who was shipped out on loan to the Hawthorns in the summer transfer window of 2018, was actually the Cottagers top target in the January transfer window of the same year, seeing their approach turned down before signing Aleksandar Mitrovic on loan.

It is stated that the recently-relegated side are seeking proven Championship experience for their return to the second tier and that Gayle, with his 21 goals this season, is someone they remain keen on taking back to the capital, having spent time with Crystal Palace before his move to St James’ Park.

Opinion

The more parties interested in Gayle the better for Newcastle, who surely will not want to keep him on board when the summer comes around. He is stuck in limbo as being too good for the Championship but having struggled to make the same mark in the Premier League, as a number of players have during their career. As such, Newcastle will be looking to offload him to the highest bidder and his record in the Championship this season means they can demand a hefty price for his sale. Fulham were big spenders last summer while West Brom are going to be limited to what they can spend if they remain in the second tier. It seems as though there could well be a bidding war emerging for his capture and that is only good news for the Magpies, who need every penny they can get to invest in their own squad this summer.
