Liverpool took a huge step towards the Premier League title when they beat Chelsea 2-0 on Sunday afternoon and supporters were thrilled by a goal-of-the-season contender from Mohamed Salah. The Liverpool attacker hadn’t scored in six before the Southampton game but notched late on there before scoring a stunner in the second-half at Anfield on Sunday. It came shortly after Sadio Mane had opened the scoring and effectively killed off the Chelsea challenge. The goal itself was spectacular – Salah picked up the ball deep on the right side before cutting in and unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top left corner. It left Kepa no chance in the Chelsea goal and sent the Kop into raptures, with one fan saying the “atmosphere at Anfield went up by ten fold after Salah’s goal”.
Salah hasn’t hit the same levels as he did in his incredible first season at Liverpool but this was a significant time to make a mark like this. On paper it was the hardest of their remaining fixtures and the 2-0 result sent out a strong message to rivals Man City, who have a season-defining 10 days in front of them. They play Tottenham in the Champions League on Wednesday, then again in the Premier League on Saturday, before travelling to Old Trafford for the Manchester derby the following Wednesday. The fate of the Premier League title might still be in Man City’s hands, but we think it’s advantage Liverpool after this. And, if Liverpool do go on to win the league, you can expect to see this goal replayed a lot more.
