A 5-0 win that puts them back to the top of the league… You’d think Liverpool fans would be delighted with Friday night’s performance, but not everyone in red got a rousing reception from the Anfield faithful. Dejan Lovren was, perhaps surprisingly, given his first start since the beginning of January, with Joel Matip and Joe Gomez on the bench. Lovren helped keep a clean sheet but didn’t escape the ire of some Liverpool fans, who pounced on some shaky moments at the back. The criticism seems a tad unfair on a couple of levels – firstly, the length of time he’s been out and secondly, he wasn’t all that bad. He’s never going to come up to the exacting standards of Virgil van Dijk alongside him, but we don’t think he had a terrible game and think there’s a certain level of “can do no right” with some of the Liverpool fans. They want better going forward and they’ll be glad to see Joe Gomez back, although when he came on late on it was to replace Trent Alexander Arnold. It will be interesting to see who Jurgen Klopp picks for the centre of defence against Barcelona in the Champions League, but we don’t think it will be Lovren. These fans certainly hope not.
