Jim White has hailed Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, claiming the he has been “superb” this season.

The Icelandic international has been a key figure for the Toffees this campaign, scoring 14 goals and catching the eye in the centre of midfield.

During a discussion on talkSPORT (April 26th, 10.15am) pundit Jamie O’Hara suggested that Sigurdsson could even have been an outside shout for the PFA team of the year, and White agreed.

O’Hara said: “Gylfi Sigurdsson, I think he’s scored 14 goals this season. He’s been brilliant.”

White then responded: “Sigurdsson’s been superb. He’s a great shout, I hadn’t even thought of him.”

OPINION

It’s good to see Sigurdsson getting the plaudits for his performances this season. The Icelandic midfielder has been a constant in Marco Silva’s side, and a really central figure to all that had been good about them this year. He hasn’t been perfect, and a place in the PFA team of the year may be a stretch, but very few of his teammates could honestly say they have been exemplary for large parts of this campaign, and when the Toffees have hit their stride, he has been a main reason why. Sigurdsson brings such an understated class to proceedings. His vision is incredible, but it’s the manner in which he glides around the final third, occasionally unleashing the spectacular, that really sets him apart from the rest. The way that he caught David De Gea off guard from distance last Sunday was a fine example of a player at the peak of his powers, and he should be recognised for the talent that he is.
