OPINION
Mateo Kovacic has had a difficult season at Stamford Bridge having joined Chelsea on loan from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. The Croatia international has found himself in and out of Maurizio Sarri’s side at times this season, with Ross Barkley providing competition for a place in the starting line-up. Kovacic has struggled to stamp his authority on games in the midfield in his first season in English football, and it was a similar story for 24-year-old against Manchester United on Sunday. In the opening 45 minuets in particular Kovacic, and his team-mates, struggled to handle the energy and pressing of Manchester United’s midfield, making it difficult for them to get into their passing rhythm. A criticism of Kovacic from many Chelsea supporters is that he does not add creativity from midfield, with Kante providing the energy and Jorginho helping Chelsea control possession, the Blues are in need of someone to add some creation to their midfield. However, Kovavcic, like the rest of his team-mates, did improve after the break and Chelsea were able to claim a point with the game ending 1-1.
