Tim Cahill suggested Everton sign Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa to address their lack of a clinical goal scorer.

The former Toffees midfielder was asked by Andy Gray who he would opt to sign if he was in charge of bringing a new forward to Goodison Park, and he named the 30-year-old.

“I would say for Everton, Diego Costa,” said Cahill in a clip on beIN SPORTS after the Toffees’ win against Manchester United on Sunday.

Gray responded to question whether Cahill thought the Toffees could realistically get Costa before revealing he agreed with the former Toffees player’s choice, as that was who he was going to say.

This prompted Cahill to justify his section of Costa and argue why the Toffees were capable of welcoming the Atletico Madrid forward to Goodison.

“You just asked me, and he is someone who would suit the style, Everton are a big-money spending club, you can’t look at Everton and say they are a small club,” explained Cahill.

“I played for Everton but I’m heavily critical on Everton too as for the club to get better it has to look at the problems and the problem is, there is no striker.

“How much did they pay for Richarlison? (Gray says £30million) Gylfi Sigurdsson (Gray says £50million) so you’re telling me between 30 and 50, and you say Diego Costa’s name and everyone says he won’t come to Everton? Firstly they can pay his wages and secondly they can afford him.”

OPINION

Atletico Madrid paid £57million to sign from Chelsea in 2017, according to the Telegraph, and he would likely cost a mouthwatering figure if he is to be on the move in the summer. While he likely will cost less than the amount Atletico Madrid paid for him, it’s hard to imagine him costing below £30million which should be a red flag for the Toffees. The forward hasn’t exactly been in great form for Atletico Madrid this season, he has managed only two goals in the league, and he may be more trouble than he is worth. Costa was a prolific force at Chelsea in the Premier League, however there always seem to be some controversy surrounding him.  You feel the London club ended up parting company with the forward more because of his disruptive influence then his skills. So would Marco Silva’s side really benefit from having someone like Costa on the books? It’s debatable to say the least.
