Manuel Pellegrini has suggested that Jack Wilshere will definitely play for West Ham again this season.

The midfielder has managed just five senior appearances this season, and hasn’t featured for the Hammers since making a five minute cameo against Newcastle United on December 1st.

A recurrent ankle injury has been the root of his issues, but Pellegrini is hopeful of a return in the very near future.

As quoted by Football.London, he said: “We will see [if he plays this weekend].

“We will talk with him but it will be this week or next week, we will see him this season.”

OPINION

Is this even the kind of news that gets West Ham supporters excited anymore? It’s an awful thing to say, because Wilshere is so incredibly talented, and because injuries have been so desperately cruel to him, but there have been so many false dawns in his career now that fans will surely only believe that he is fit to play when they see it. Even then, most wouldn’t be convinced, and from now until he hangs up his boots, Wilshere will be haunted by the spectre of a hundred niggling injuries that have stopped him becoming the player we all hoped he would. There is still time for him to make a real impact at West Ham, and you would hope that the ankle surgery that has kept him out will finally solve his problems but, as sad as it may be, nobody will be holding their breath at the London Stadium.
