Credit where credit is due, Ayoze Perez has been absolutely magnificent in recent weeks. The Spaniard was in danger of becoming a perpetual whipping boy for Newcastle United fans after a disappointing start to the campaign, but he has silenced any critics with a series of wonderful displays, capped off with a brilliant hat trick against Southampton on Saturday afternoon. The 25-year-old has looked like a new man since Miguel Almiron signed for the club, and it would seem that he has really found his groove at St. James’ Park. His ability has never been in doubt, but his consistency has, and there have been times when you can understand some of the criticism that he has received. When he is off form he can look disinterested and flippant, but when he manages to find some kind of purple patch, like he has recently, he is almost unplayable. It would seem as if Newcastle fans are coming round to that viewpoint judging as many seemed in awe of his display after he celebrated his performance on Twitter. One Magpies fan even claimed Perez was getting better every year. His signature celebration, fingers in ears, grin plastered across his face, a direct affront to the critics, tells you everything you need to know about the forward. He knows what he can do, he is determined to show it, and no amount criticism will quell his desire to perform for the Magpies.
