COMMENTARY
Newcastle United fans were understandably excited when their club splashed the cash on Atlanta United speed demon Miguel Almiron and Saturday afternoon at St James’ Park showed why they were right to be expectant. The Paraguayan international was electric from the first whistle, showing a lightning fast turn of pace and a desire to put visitors Southampton to the sword. The likes of James Ward-Prowse could not deal with how fleet of foot he was and he had the Toon Army up on their feet time and again. He is the perfect player for Rafael Benitez and his counter attacking style of football, ensuring that the opposition are always wary of committing too many men forward in the fear he could carve them open – which happened again and again to the Saints. He might have been trying a little too hard to try and find the back of the net but you cannot fault his work ethic. It is just a shame his day ended in injury. This could well have been his best performance since arriving in England – the worrying thing for Newcastle’s Premier League rivals is there is definitely more to come.
This is Futbol has gathered a selection of the Newcastle fans’ tweets buzzing over the Paraguayan:
Miguel Almiron is an absolute joy to watch! Gives 100% every week and never stops running – what every fan loves to see ?#NUFC@NUFC_Index

I don’t care if Almiron never scores a goal for us, he’s a proper player, and has transformed our team. #NUFC

#nufc Perez on fire, Rondon immense & Almiron’s woekrate superb. He frightens them. Special mention for Hayden & Schar too – a great first half !
But Manquillo ((who had a good game v Leicester) very suspect at the back !— ToonTone100 (@Toontone100) April 20, 2019
Almiron has this team on strings btw. If thet weren't just kicking him at every opportunity we'd have created even more chances, he's remarkable

Don’t care if Almiron never scores or assists. Tries as hard as any player since Beardsley
