Paul Merson is baffled that Wolves duo Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho did not make it into the PFA Team of the Year.

The line-up was announced on Thursday and it mainly included players from the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, with Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba the only player to be chosen from the rest of the Premier League.

The Sky Sports pundit was puzzled why the midfield pair were not in with a shout, and he also questioned why stars like Christian Eriksen were left out.

“He talks a good game, Pogba. But he doesn’t back it up on the pitch very often. And there are plenty of other players who deserve a place in the PFA team more than he does,” he said in his Daily Star column.”How does Eden Hazard not get in there? Or Christian Eriksen? They’ve both done more than Pogba this season.

“Even two of the boys from Wolves, Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho. How good have they been? Wolves got to an FA Cup semi final and could be in Europe!”

OPINION

Merson has got it absolutely spot here – Pogba definitely did not deserve to be in this line-up, a decision which many would have thought was very bizarre. Like the Sky pundit pointed out, there were quite a few other players who deserved to be named ahead of him, and he is absolutely right to question why Neves and Moutinho were not in there. In their quarter-final FA Cup win over United a while ago, the likes of Moutinho completely outclassed the likes of Pogba that evening. The difference in quality was there for all to see, so it is not a surprised that Merson is baffled by this decision. Players like Neves and Moutinho deserve to be recognised for the effort they have put in during their first season back in the Premier League – but that does not look like it will come their way anytime soon. There is always next season, isn’t there?
