Gareth McAuley is expected to leave Rangers in the summer, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that Steven Gerrard wants to add to his defence in the upcoming transfer window as McAuley, 39, is likely to be on his way out of Ibrox once his contract expires at the end of the season.

Joe Worrall, who is on loan from Nottingham Forest, is also unlikely to earn an extended stay in Govan.

OPINION

McAuley was a free signing for Rangers at the start of the season and due to his age there weren’t many high expectations about the former West Brom centre-back. He has made 10 appearances in all competitions for the Light Blues this term, and while he hasn’t exactly been bad in those performances, he hasn’t been great either. McAuley did a job when Gerrard needed him to do it and that’s been about it for the Northern Irish colossus. Hopefully the 6ft 3 (transfermarkt) defender can find himself a new club in the summer transfer window and is not forced into retirement through a lack of options at this stage of his career. McAuley has not shown any sign of wanting to retire even though he will turn 40-years-old in December. He could always return to Northern Ireland if someone in their top-flight wanted him or return south of the border to play in League One or League Two. Sadly he is not going to be good enough for Rangers past the expiration of his contract.
