OPINION

Manchester City looked angry against Tottenham on Saturday afternoon, and who can really blame them? After that scintillating match on Wednesday night that ended in such a cruel, cruel dismissal from the Champions League, Pep Guardiola’s men had plenty to prove against their visitors this time around, and it showed. They really came out swinging in the first half, and were rewarded for a breathless start with an early goal from Phil Foden. Far from settling the nerves, however, it only seemed to make things more fraught for the defending champions. Largely culpable for that uncertainty was John Stones. The England international looked shaky from the off, and was nearly caught out early on by Son Heung-min. His nerviness didn’t end there though. Consistently he looked unsure of himself, out of position, and like an accident waiting to happen. Usually so calm and composed at the heart of defence, Stones spent most of the first half wandering a little, looking genuinely scared of the prospect of Son running at him again. This season is on a knife edge at the moment, and the last thing City need is one of their key men playing like a schoolboy when it matters most.
