Malcolm Macdonald believes that if Rafa Benitez’s future is secured at Newcastle United this summer, then the likes of Ayoze Perez will stay at the club.

The £45,000-a-week [Spotrac] ace scored the winner in the Magpies’ last Premier League game against Leicester last Friday, and Macdonald reckons that the small elements of his game are the things that are often overlooked about him.

He thinks that the 25-year-old is only going to improve, and now that he has Miguel Almiron playing with him, his goal threat has got a lot better.

“I think the subtleties of his game are often overlooked. He’s a clever player, he’s only 25, and he’s going to get better. Rafa Benitez for one appreciates him – if Rafa stays Perez stays, I believe,” he said in his Chronicle column.

“For me, Ayoze’s goal threat has improved significantly since Miggy Almiron came into the side. There is much more balance, much more penetration, in the front three now.”

OPINION

Towards the start of the season, Perez was one of the many players who were getting really blasted for their performances for Newcastle. There would have been times when some fans called for him to be sold, and rightly so – he was really ineffective at this point, and he did not offer anything new towards the team. However, things could not be more different now – Perez is a much better player than he was, and that is down to the signing of Almiron. There is a lot more confidence in Perez’ game now, and he has a lot more freedom to score now that Almiron is in the team. Macdonald is right though – Benitez has stood by him as he no doubt appreciates his contribution, even when times where getting tough for the Spaniard. He has now been proved right in his stance, and the fans will be hoping that Perez will stay at the club for years to come.
