Leeds United had six members of its backroom staff at Wigan Athletic’s draw with Norwich City on Sunday ahead of their Good Friday clash with the Latics, according to Phil Hay.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reporter, one of the most reputed journalists covering events at Elland Road, claims on his personal Twitter account he was told by someone at Wigan that there were half a dozen of the Whites’ people in attendance to watch the 1-1 stalemate, with the league leaders having to come from behind to snatch a point.

Hay stated that the analysis manager Marcelo Bielsa was doing was “off the scale”, having already treated journalists to a taster of how he scouts the opposition earlier in the season after the spygate saga.

Opinion

Leeds really are leaving no stone unturned in the hunt to be promoted this season and that means sending numerous members of staff to ensure they have a detailed and comprehensive report on their next opponents. Considering where Wigan are languishing in the table as well as their terrible away record, there will be plenty expecting Leeds to stroll to victory on Friday but you need only look at the way the Latics frustrated Norwich City to see that they have the potential to cause an upset. Bielsa knows how crucial every single game is from here until the end of the season and he will not allow his team to be surprised by what the opposition has to offer. He will have had each member of staff carrying out a different analysis, from the defending to the attack, focusing on their strengths, weaknesses and all round general play. Analysis on opponents happens, that much is obvious, but on this scale? Bielsa really is in a class of his own in the Championship.
