Newcastle United outcast Achraf Lazaar has confirmed that he has been talking to Sheffield Wednesday about extending his stay at Hillsborough past the end of this season.

The 27-year-old left-back joined the Championship club on loan in the January transfer window but has since only managed four appearances for Steve Bruce’s side.

Although there has been a lack of game-time for Lazaar, he has revealed that Sheffield Wednesday want to keep hold of him and there have been discussions with the Yorkshire club about a potential summer agreement.

“Sheffield would like to keep me, we’re talking about it,” he told Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb. “I have a two-year contract with Newcastle, see.”

“Italy is my home. But for now I’m happy with Sheffield. You can evaluate everything. It is a pleasure to receive interests.”

OPINION

Lazaar has been one almighty flop for Newcastle, but he has found his feet a little bit at Sheffield Wednesday by starting to earn the odd appearance here and there. Bruce has done a fine job since taking charge at Hillsborough and Lazaar should be proud of his performances so far as every time he has played, the Owls have won. He completed 90 minutes on Monday as they beat play-off chasing Bristol City 2-0, so it would not be a shock if the Yorkshire side does try to sign the Morocco international on a new deal in the summer. Newcastle will surely be more than pleased to let the former Palermo left-back leave because he has only managed 10 appearances for them in all competitions since he was signed in 2017. Rafa Benitez and Mike Ashley will no doubt want him off the wagebill and as he has impressed at Sheffield Wednesday, he might fetch a surprisingly decent transfer fee.
