This summer is undoubtedly a crossroads for Celtic and the decisions which are made could shape the long term future of the club.

After what could potentially be a third successive treble winning campaign, it is clear that the Hoops need to focus on making waves on the European stage – after all, they have achieved all they can domestically.

Former manager Brendan Rodgers failed to make the impact he would have wanted to when it came to the likes of the Champions League and Europa League and their performances on the continent demonstrated how far behind Scottish football is compared to other divisions.

As such, serious improvements are needed – starting with the man in the dugout.

Neil Lennon is the temporary boss in charge and it seems as though he is in the running to take over permanently once again, but club chief Peter Lawwell should be aiming much higher than the Northern Irishman.

What Celtic need is someone with a pedigree of European success, someone who has been there and done it when it comes to building and managing a side capable of competing with varying tactics and midweek fixtures.

Lennon represents the Celtic of old, but the Hoops need something fresh to start their new chapter – which is why Lawwell must use Fulham’s reported interest in the current Parkhead boss to search for someone new.

The Scottish Sun claim that Lennon is in the running for the job at Craven Cottage but that he will only be open to it if he is not handed the Celtic post – something which could hold the club back rather than letting them push for brighter things.

Lawwell needs to let Lennon leave for England, giving him another shot south of the border, and open up the opportunity for an ambitious coach to take the helm and drive Celtic to greater things than just domestic success.
