Sky Sports pundit Danny Higginbotham has heaped praise on Man City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne and compared him to Man United legend Paul Scholes.

De Bruyne put on another midfield masterclass in the Champions League on Wednesday night but ended up on the losing side despite City winning 4-3 at the Etihad.

That scoreline meant that Man City went out on away goals after having an injury-time goal disallowed by VAR.

Talking on Match Centre on Thursday (Sky Sports, Thursday, 10.30am), Higginbotham said, “He’s absolutely incredible. I love the way he goes about it.

“The way De Bruyne plays depends on the players in front of him. He’s always on the move, always looking what’s around him.

“As a player what I love about him, no matter how crowded the box our the pitch is, he always finds time.

“What I love about De Bruyne, he reminds me of Paul Scholes, in finding time and space. More often than not he picks the right options, an incredible footballer.”

OPINION

Man City won’t be winning the quadruple this season but they were the best team last night and paid the price for not scoring a goal in the first leg. Sergio Aguero missed a penalty in that game and when you add that to the VAR decisions last night it becomes a case of fine margins. Now they have to pick themselves up and concentrate on winning the league, where their fate is in their hands. If they win all their remaining games they’ll win the league. That they’ve done what they’ve done this season largely without De Bruyne shows just how good the current Man City squad is. De Bruyne was out for the first-half of the season with a bad knee injury and he’s only started 10 Premier League games. He’s back now and as good as ever on last night’s evidence. His first job now will be to help his side exact revenge on Tottenham when they meet at the Etihad again on Saturday.
