Goldstein: Spurs should sell Kane

TalkSPORT host Andy Goldstein has suggested that Tottenham could reach the “next level” by selling Harry Kane and reinvesting the money on several key players.

Spurs are currently without their talisman after he aggravated a longstanding ankle injury in the Champions League quarter final first leg win over Manchester City a fortnight ago, and Goldstein believes that they could be better off using any potential fee he would fetch to strengthen their squad in numerous areas.

Speaking on talkSPORT, using Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side as a point of reference, he said: “The turning point for Liverpool from this season to last was getting rid of Coutinho, keeping that money and spending it on a brilliant goalkeeper and a world class centre-half. That’s the difference for Liverpool.

“If Spurs were to sell Harry Kane for £200 million and bring in three £70 million players, would that take them from where they are now to the Liverpool level?

“They’re scoring goals without Kane. Spurs need to get to that next level.”

OPINON

This is a big, big claim from Goldstein, but it might not be the daftest thing he has ever said. Kane is vital, that much is obvious, and it is a point that has been drummed into Spurs’ fans from the moment he broke into the first team. But the fact that he is so vital also makes him very, very valuable. If Kane were to be sold tomorrow, he would almost certainly go for a fee close to the world record sum paid for Neymar by PSG. The market may be inflated, and Kane would be a big player to replace, but imagine what Spurs could do with £200 million. Liverpool have shown that with a couple of savvy, big time investments you can catapult yourselves from also-rans to title contenders, and theoretically, Spurs are in a better position than Liverpool were when they sold Coutinho. This time last year, suggesting Kane’s departure on any level would have been blasphemous, but for the most part Spurs have coped quite well without him this season. Stranger things have happened, and it could be the making of this side.
