Everton are set to table a new one-year deal to veteran left-back Leighton Baines, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports that boss Marco Silva has discussed with the 34-year-old – whose contract expires in the summer – about what he plans to do next season, saying that he wants him to remain at the club for another 12 months.

The former England international – who is on £70,000-a-week [Spotrac] at Goodison Park – cost the club £6 million back in 2007 from Wigan.

The report adds that talks about a new deal for defender Phil Jagielka are ongoing.

OPINION

Summer signing Lucas Digne may have established himself as the club’s first choice left-back this season, but that does not mean that Baines cannot be useful to Silva next term. He may be 34, but he still possesses some of the same ability that won him the hearts of the Everton fans in the first place. Silva can rest easy knowing that he has some quality cover for the role in the shape of Baines, who arguably has some of the most dangerous deliveries out there. You know that when he crosses the ball, someone is pretty much certain to get on the end of it. Yes, he may not be playing too regularly, but to have him in the wings is a peace of mind. Next season could possibly be the last in his playing career if Everton go ahead with a new contract offer, and the fans will certainly be pleased to hear that he could stay at the club that little bit longer.
