Theo Walcott has not enjoyed the best of times at Everton this season – it does not take an expert to work that one out.

The 30-year-old’s move to Merseyside from Arsenal has not exactly gone according to plan, and more often than not, he has been at the centre of criticism from the Everton fans – and rightly so. They must have been getting frustrated that a player of his quality just can’t perform.

This has meant that he has spent time on the sidelines in favour of the talented Bernard, a player who makes things look easy and effortless. In fact, he has been sublime – sometimes it is easy to forget that he only signed on a free transfer.

Walcott must realise that he has a lot of work to do to win over the hearts of the supporters. However, a report from the Mirror says that he could be part of a clear-out by Marco Silva this summer.

As tempting as it may be to cut their losses and offload him, they must resist the urge to do so. In the 4-0 pummelling of Manchester United on Sunday, Walcott showed glimpses of what he is capable of, especially after completing the rout with a well-taken goal.

He needs to improve, that is a given. Silva is taking the easy way out by potentially plotting an exit for him – the speedster still has so much more to offer, and it would simply go to waste if he were to let him leave.

Many clubs would jump at the chance to sign a player with his experience, and rightly so. His failings this season should not overshadow what he achieved while at Arsenal.

Silva needs to give Walcott the chance to prove himself next season, as he may regret it otherwise.
