Former Leeds United stars and current Sky Sports pundits Tony Dorigo and Michael Brown were left tearing the finishing of Tyler Roberts to pieces in the club’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Brentford.

The Elland Road outfit saw their automatic play off hopes left hanging by a thread after losing to the Bees, insult added to injury with a clear penalty decision which was not given Leeds’ way in the first half.

However, the Whites were also wasteful with what chances they did create and former Leeds pair Dorigo and Brown were critical of Roberts’ lack of composure up top.

Dorigo started the criticism on Sky Sports‘ post-match (22/04, 19:31), coverage by saying: “We seem to have to create lots and lots of chances in order to score and sometimes you just want that striker to bobble one in or be very, very clinical.

“Unfortunately this season that has been the problem. These are really good chances. If you think this one (Roberts chance) Maupay scores just like that, knocks it out of his feet and scores. Tyler Roberts there gets it too far in front of him.”

Joining in the conversation about the former West Brom man, Brown said: “The first two, the touch from Roberts, it’s very, very straightforward. Marcelo Bielsa is setting them up in a way to win games and I know you’re only as good as your front three but they’ve got to do better.”

Opinion

There were plenty of Leeds players to point the finger of blame at on Monday afternoon but quite frankly Roberts will be bearing the brunt of the criticism and rightly so. Had he stuck away one of his clear cut chances, who knows what the end result would have been. Yes, the penalty claim from Patrick Bamford should have been given but you cannot rely on the officials and so instead needed to take their opportunities when the came along. Roberts failed to do that and considering he was brought in as a striker from West Brom, he showed an alarming lack of quality when it came to sticking the ball in the back of the net. He has got a lot to learn if he wants to remain in the Leeds XI for the foreseeable future, for his inexperience was clear as day versus Brentford. Unfortunately for the Whites, that could well be another couple of years in the Championship.
