James Shan expects Craig Dawson to return to the West Brom squad for their clash against Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Tuesday night.

Dawson, 28, missed the 2-0 defeat to Millwall on Saturday due to illness, but it appears as though he has gotten over the worst of it and should be able to play this week.

“I expect Craig to be back in,” said Shan, as quoted by the Express & Star. “He had a sickness thing, I couldn’t run the risk of that being spread and passing it on at the hotel.

“We have to be very careful, keep people away, I’ll speak to the medical staff but I fully expect him to be in Monday and available on Tuesday.”

West Brom will be without Ahmed Hegazi for their trip down the M5 as the Egypt international was sent off against Millwall, meaning that Dawson’s return from illness is a welcome boost.

OPINION

It would be a nightmare scenario for West Brom fans if they lined up against Bristol City with Kyle Bartley and Tosin Adarabioyo at the heart of the defence. Albion’s backline has consistently struggled all season, even when at full-strength, so having to play their two back-up centre-backs would have been a major blow for their trip to Ashton Gate. Luckily Dawson is back, and while the ex-Rochdale defender hasn’t been amazing for the Baggies this season, he is still a better option than the other centre-backs amid Hegazi’s suspension. West Brom are more than likely going to miss out on automatic promotion this season due to their inept defence. For a team that was so solid at the back for years in the Premier League, the amount of goals they have conceded this season has been poor to say the last. West Brom need to re-evaluate their defensive options in the summer, no matter what league they are playing in.
