Robbie Savage believes Leeds United were so unfortunate to lose 2-1 to Wigan on Friday.

The outspoken pundit seemed surprised that the Whites had lost to Wigan, especially as they played a large portion of the game against 10-men, and highlighted Leeds’ stellar record when taking the lead in games.

Savage pointed out that out of the 21 times Leeds had gone in front in a match, they had gone on to win 20 of those games.

“Leeds so unfortunate v Wigan, they’ve gone in front 21 times this season and out of those 20 times they’ve won and then they lose at home to Wigan, 10-men as well, what a result for Wigan,” said Savage on BBC Radio 5 Live (17:49, Saturday April 20th).

“Leaves Leeds and Sheffield fighting for that second-place.”

OPINION

Savage’s verdict on Leeds’ loss against Wigan won’t help accepting their side’s latest defeat any easier for Leeds supporters. Marcelo Bielsa’s side dominated the game and had so many opportunities to put the match beyond doubt, but they fluffed their lines in front of goal. This result could end up haunting Leeds and it’s no surprise that Savage acknowledges that losing to Wigan, leaves the club fighting with Sheffield Untied for automatic promotion. Leeds looked in the driving seat when it came to finishing second ahead of Friday, but now that loss looks like causing another turn in the race to get up. However the Whites have been written off time and time again this season and have always rebounded in spectacular fashion. While there may not be many games left to play, you feel there’s at least one more twist in the tale regarding the Whites and the Blades’ promotion hopes.
