Leeds United fans want one thing and one thing only this season: promotion.

They do not care one iota if it comes as winners of the Championship, as runners up or as play-off champions – although you can be sure no one wants to go through the lottery of the latter.

It has been a case of so far, so good for those at Elland Road, with their side sitting five points behind Norwich but more crucially three points ahead of Sheffield United in the battle for second.

It has been a team effort so far and everyone in the squad has been called upon to make a difference, although two men who will no doubt receive the plaudits if they do seal a Premier League return will be Kemar Roofe and Pablo Hernandez.

The duo have been brilliant when in the starting XI and they are the club’s top two scorers, the Spaniard trailing his English counterpart, who sits on 14 for the season, by two goals, Patrick Bamford sitting third with nine.

However, Roofe insists there is not competition to finish top of the rankings, insisting that it is all about the team performance instead.

Asked about being top scorer by the Yorkshire Evening Post, he said: “Honestly, it wouldn’t mean anything. As long as my performances are good and the team wins and we get promoted, that’s the main thing.

“Whoever scores, it is what it is. I would rather play 10 out of 10 and someone else scores than play two out of 10 and score a goal. I would rather put the performance in. But if the team keeps winning I am not going to play so I am not going to score any!”

A modest response from the 26-year-old – but manager Marcelo Bielsa could ramp up the club’s attacking threat by igniting a rivalry between the trio.

Footballers are always going to be competitive and if he can get his star attackers fighting to finish as top scorer, the trio could fire the club to promotion in their efforts.

It would give the teammates something other than promotion to play for and they, as well as the team, should thrive from the desire to be the best at Elland Road.
