Leeds United fans were left urging their side on with an impassioned roar at full time after having watched their side lose to Brentford on Monday, according to journalist Paul Brown.

The Daily Star writer claims on his personal Twitter account that despite seeing their automatic promotion hopes dealt a huge blow with a 2-0 defeat, the travelling supporters were raucous at Griffin Park, showing a great deal of support for their team.

Leeds went into the game knowing that only a win would do after Sheffield United picked up three points with a 3-0 win over fellow Yorkshire rivals Hull City.

United started well in the game with Patrick Bamford missing a chance then being denied a clear penalty after being tripped by Bees defender Julian Jeanvier.

Things went downhill just before half-time, when Neil Maupay latched onto a through ball and found the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

The result was all but confirmed after another slick counter-attack from the home side found Sergi Canos who delightfully chipped Kiko Casilla in a crowded Leeds penalty area.

Leeds fans were gracious in defeat and even though their promotion hopes seemed to disappear with the final whistle, it was revealed the travelling faithful were full of support for their players.

OPINION

Despite Leeds fans optimism after the final whistle, their hopes of automatic promotion to the Premier League are all but over. With an inferior goal difference to Sheffield United, all the Blades have to do now is beat already relegated Ipswich Town at home and they will have almost confirmed their promotion. It has all gone wrong for Leeds and the repeated failures in front of goal has cost them the chance of sealing promotion themselves. Combine that with the lack of defensive resolve in the last two months and you can see why they’ve struggled to cope with pressure. Both Norwich and Sheffield United will thank Brentford for their role in the defeat but the blame lies solely with Leeds who have crumbled under the pressure of recent weeks and will have to deal with the agony of the Play-Offs if they are to stand a chance of returning to the Premier League after a 15-year absence.
