Wigan midfielder Lee Evans has admitted to being a Leeds fan when he was growing up and wants to see Marcelo Bielsa win promotion back to the Premier League this season.

The 24-year-old, who ironically signed from Sheffield United in January – Leeds’ closest promotion rivals – has played at Elland Road twice before with Wolves.

He was on the winning side both times and while he wants the three points from Elland Road on Friday, he also wants Leeds to get promoted.

“Leeds United is a great club and I think most people appreciate they should be in the Premier League,” said Evans, as quoted in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“I have experienced first hand what the atmosphere is like at Elland Road as a fan and player. I get the feeling it is going to be electric on Good Friday with it being a full house.

“My team-mate at Wigan, Leon Clarke, scored the winner when we won at Leeds with Wolves in 2014 and – whilst I do hope Leeds go up – I wouldn’t mind the same outcome on Good Friday!”

OPINION

Wigan are as desperate for the points as Leeds are at the moment. They’re currently one place above the relegation zone with a two-point buffer between them and Rotherham. Leeds, meanwhile, are enjoying much better fortune, sitting in second with a three-point lead over Sheffield United in third. There are four games left in the season and Evans is right when he says he’s expecting an ‘electric’ atmosphere. The Leeds supporters might have been quieter than normal during the game against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, but we’re putting that down to nerves and the roof lifted when their side scored. They should be in full voice on Friday. Wigan have only won one game in 12 and that was against fellow strugglers Bolton. No one is expecting them to come away with the three points from Elland Road but nothing but the three points will do for Leeds. It’s set to be a cracker.
