Celtic have a big decision to make in the summer. Do they stick with Neil Lennon as manager, who is a relatively safe pair of hands? Or do they twist and look to bring in a new name?

Writing in his column in the Daily Star, Charlie Nicholas believes that Lennon will get the job but admits ” there is a part of me that would like to see Celtic spread the net wider and go for a fresh approach.

“I’d seriously consider casting the net wider to see if there’s a manager with a new approach.

“For all the 10-in-a-row hype, that isn’t all that floats my boat. I want to see Celtic make bigger strides in Europe and for that I think they can broaden their horizons.”

He thinks that whoever is manager in the summer has a “MASSIVE job on his hands” and claims they will need to bring in six players to the starting XI.

That’s major surgery and there must be a real doubt over whether Lennon has the vision and experience to craft a team that can go to the next level in Europe.

Fans of Lennon would point to him bringing in Virgil van Dijk in his last reign at Celtic Park, but we’re not convinced lightning can strike twice.

Lennon has the passion, he knows the club inside out and he’s the safe appointment. But this is the time for Celtic to spread its wings and take a risk.

The alternative is to stagnate in Europe and risk Rangers overtaking them domestically.

They’ve had the time to find the perfect man – we wouldn’t be surprised if they were scouring Europe for the right manager at the moment, with Lennon as the fallback option if they can’t find the perfect candidate.

That’s not a bad position to be in but we feel this summer is set to be a defining one in the club’s history and we don’t think Lennon is the man to take them forward.
