Boyd: McGregor is not world class

Kris Boyd has been left infuriated by a question on whether or not Callum McGregor is “world class”.

The Celtic midfielder is in the running for the Scottish Premiership’s player of the year, and that led to Boyd being asked whether or not he was a top tier talent during an appearance on Sky, as reported by the Daily Record.

And it’s safe to say that he was left less than impressed with the query.

He said: “The term of world-class annoys the life out of me.

“There are two world-class players, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

“To compare anybody with them is just crazy.”

OPINION

Boyd might have gone a bit over the top on this one, but he does raise a valid point. Messi and Ronaldo are not the only world class players in football. The game would be in a sorry state if they were. But, at the same time, any suggestion that McGregor is world class is hyperbolic. Are there any truly world class players in Scotland at the moment? No. That is just a statement of fact. Even the best talents would struggle to consistently start for a top six side in England. Whether that will change, and here’s hoping it does, remains to be seen. But right now, it is almost ridiculous to suggest that anybody in Scotland is world class. On a less cynical note, McGregor has been brilliant this season, and should he pick up the award for player of the year, it would be a fully deserved recognition of his achievements.
