Former Tottenham attacker Dimitar Berbatov believes that Tottenham will sign a striker this summer.

Talking to Betfair, Berbatov said he thought Daniel Levy would move for a player who would be able to deputise for Harry Kane, as well as providing competition for his place in the side.

Berbatov also heaped praise on the new stadium after playing in the Legends game last weekend.

“I was lucky enough to play in Tottenham’s ‘Legends’ game last weekend and let me tell you something – the stadium is a work of art,” Berbatov said. “Honestly, it’s one of the best in Europe.

“Speaking from a players’ perspective everything is perfect. All the small details have been thought about. Everything a player needs before a game is there and everything he needs after a game is there. For me it was a pleasure to play there. I told Daniel Levy that the only minus is that is wasn’t there when I played for Spurs!”

Tottenham haven’t signed anyone for two windows but Berbatov believes that will change in the summer.

“I think the club will go for a striker. Harry Kane is a wonderful player but he needs a rest every so often but also some competition for his place. Spurs will play a similar level of games next season and it’s just not possible to play in them all. You need competition to drive you forward and show your best qualities.”

OPINION

It’s not easy to sign a striker when your main man is as dominant as Harry Kane. It would be tough to put a price on Kane at the moment and there’s no way Tottenham will sign a second striker of the same calibre. That leaves the incoming player aware that he’ll be playing second fiddle to Kane and probably getting limited game time. It’s going to be tough to get an established player to agree to that and veterans like Fernando Llorente just don’t cut it. That’s the big conundrum that Spurs have to solve and it might be that they need to look at upcoming players who are just about to take the next step up. There is always a risk with that but it’s tough to see any other route that Levy can go down. Spurs fans will be looking for more than one signing too. We think they need a new right-back, definitely a new centre-mid, and potentially an attacking mid if Christian Eriksen leaves and a centre-back if Toby Alderweireld goes. After two windows of no activity, they could be one of the busiest clubs this summer.
