Former Tottenham player Darren Anderton is convinced that Tottenham will triumph over Ajax in the Champions League semi-final.

Tottenham play the first leg next week after knocking out favourites Man City on goal difference in a thrilling 4-3 defeat at the Etihad.

Anderton has also predicted that Tottenham will win a trophy in the next couple of years.

Talking on Sky Sports (Thursday, 10,30am), Anderton said of the semi-final, “Two great teams playing great football and I think it’s going to be a fantastic tie but I really do think Spurs will go through.

“If someone had said at the start of the season you’d be playing Ajax in the semi-finals of the CL of course you’d have taken it. The new stadium puts the club on another level and the next step is winning trophies, which I believe they will do in the next couple of years.”

OPINION

While any Tottenham fan would have jumped at the chance of playing Ajax in the semi-finals of the Champions League, it won’t be easy. They already got rid of Real Madrid and Juventus and they’ll be looking at Tottenham in the same way and licking their lips. It’s a fantastic opportunity for Spurs though, who have a very real shot at getting to within 90 minutes of lifting the Champions League. What an achievement that would be. The trophy drought needs to be broken at Tottenham, but very few thought that’d have a chance of doing it in the Champions League. If they get past Ajax then they’ll be the big dogs against either Liverpool or Barcelona in the final, but can they win a 90-minute game against Liverpool? Of course they can. And it’s Klopp’s team they would prefer to play in the final, with Barcelona the current bookies favourites to lift the trophy.
