The father of Newcastle United midfielder Miguel Almiron says his son has suffered an injury blow which will likely keep him out until the end of the season.

The Paraguayan ace was forced to limp off in tears during the Magpies’ 3-1 victory against Southampton on Saturday, Ayoze Perez’s hat trick sealing the club’s place in the Premier League for next season.

Ruben Almiron told Paraguayan media that the midfield maestro would miss the next three weeks, which would bring the January signing’s season to an end, with a muscle injury.

He is quoted by ABC Color as saying: “He suffered a muscle contracture and will be out for three weeks. It’s because of the load of matches he has been playing. Now he’s going to rest. He will miss the last three games of his team, but he has already fulfilled the goal (of survival)”

Opinion

Almiron’s father is known for speaking about his son when it comes to his status both on and off the field and so Newcastle fans now know that they will not be seeing Almiron again this season. It is a huge shame for both the Toon Army and the player himself, with everyone at St James’ Park loving the electric energy he brings to the side. It is lucky Newcastle have secured Premier League safety with the Paraguayan ace ruled out for without him in the side, who knows if they will be able to muster up another victory before the season is out. It is important he rests up not only for the Copa America but for next season, when the Toon Army will be expecting even bigger and brighter things from their new talisman. His performances so far have been good but there is still that final cutting edge missing and so he has to spend this summer getting fully up to speed.
