Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has revealed that teammate Michel Vorm was “screaming like a fool” when Ajax beat Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Dutch giants saw off the Serie A leaders 3-2 on aggregate after a 2-1 in Italy, setting up a last four clash with Tottenham, who themselves beat Manchester City on away goals after a pulsating match on Wednesday evening.

And ex-Ajax man Alderweireld has claimed that his former club’s upset sent Dutchman Michel Vorm into a meltdown.

As quoted by reliable journalist Kristof Terreur, he said: “Some of the lads wanted to watch Barca – United, but we didn’t agree. We prefered Juve-Ajax.

“After the 1-1 I went to my room – early night. But then I heard Michel Vorm screaming like a fool. I checked Livescore.

“Ajax had beaten Juve, can you believe it?”

OPINION

To be fair to Michel Vorm, this was a bit of a crazy result. Nobody expected Ajax to knockout Real Madrid, but when they did and drew Juventus in the next round, most supporters must have been thinking that that was that. Instead, however, they went to Italy and put in a truly fantastic performance. They were brave and attacking, exciting and assured, and they fully deserved their result. That might have been brilliant to watch as a neutral, but from a Tottenham perspective, it will be very worrying. You would expect Spurs to edge this one. But you’d also expect them to be playing Real Madrid or Juventus at this stage of the competition. Ajax are young, hungry, and dangerous, and if they’re not careful, Spurs could end up screaming for entirely different reasons when the two sides meet at the end of the month. This could be a classic.
