West Ham defender Pablo Zabaleta has thrown his future at the London Stadium up in the air as he lets the clock count down on his crunch decision of whether to pen a contract extension in east London.

The Hammers stalwart is out of contract at the end of the season and despite being a mainstay in the side is yet to commit to another campaign with the Irons.

Speaking of his future, Zabaleta did nothing to quash the suggestion he could leave, insisting he needed time to make the right decision.

He told El Intransigente: “My contract in England ends in June and I have the possibility of renewing, but football changes and I will wait for the right moment (to decide).

“Today I feel happy here, I did my whole career in England, I’ve been in 11 seasons, my family is happy living in London. I came to West Ham to continue playing and have more minutes, this is what I was looking for and I started in 80% of the games.”

Opinion

Way to leave the Hammers fans hanging in suspense Pablo. It seems pretty clear that the Irons would like the Argentine veteran to remain at the club for at least another season and when you consider his experience and know how in the Premier League, it makes absolute sense. Losing him would not only be a big blow out on the pitch but also in the dressing room, where it is well known he is a strong personality and respected member of the group. It sounds like he is happy at the club but at the same time there appear to be doubts over whether remaining with Manuel Pellegrini’s side is the right thing to do. Perhaps there are no promises of playing time next season – the south American star obviously valuing the amount of action available to him above all else – and if that is the case you can understand why he might be having doubts. He does not have long left in his career and he clearly wants to be playing until the last possible moment.
